Judy (Lehr) Badwey prepared this tasty dish for a baby shower in 1973. The shower was hosted at Flora’s home for Susan Eaton. The following month, Christopher Ryan Eaton was born.

Sugar Cutout Cookies

By Marcia Eaton, wife of Roger Eaton,  grandson*

*Relation to Andy and/or Flora Lehr

The Hurlburt sugar cut out cookie tradition started at 1410 Lowe Street, El Dorado, Kansas in the 1960’s.  The original recipe was adapted from a Betty Crocker booklet.  We made cookies for every holiday.  At that time, it was a three-day process.  Dough was made and refrigerated overnight. The next day cookies were cut out. On the last day they were frosted. Today, I make smaller batches so I complete them in one day. It was an art to make them without the dough sticking to the cookie cutters, especially the old fashioned red detailed cutters.  I still have the collection of cookie cutters.

When I was in high school, I used to make these for Roger, he was so thin.  When Jim and Mary Eaton came to visit, the first thing Jim asked when he walked through the door was, please can you make the cookies?  Our kids, Muriel and A.J., learned to make them too, especially the part of adding the sprinkles.   I have shared this recipe and other family members make them as well.

Cookie Butter Swirl Fudge

By Lacey Hamilton, great granddaughter*

*Relation to Andy and/or Flora Lehr

I’m a big fan a Trader Joe’s. Which means, of course, I am also a big fan of Cookie Butter. This weekend I whipped up a batch of this Cookie Butter Swirl Fudge to share with my team at work. I’m pretty proud of the combo. You’ve been warned though; it’s very sweet. Like verging on too sweet. That just means it pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee, and one piece will satisfy your sweet tooth.

If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s near you or Cookie Butter on hand (I’m sorry if that’s the case.) then any nut butter would work. A bonus? This takes all of 5 minute to prepare.

More delicious recipes can be found at Lacey’s blog.  A link her blog is provided below.
