Flora Lehr developed this recipe. It has become a favorite at family gatherings.
Ingredients
- Baking soda 1 teaspoon
- Butter (Oleo) 1 stick
- Buttermilk ½ cup
- Cocoa 4 tablespoons
- Eggs 2
- Flour (sifted) 2 cups
- Shorting or veg. oil ½ cup
- Sugar 2 cups
- Vanilla extract 1 teaspoon
- Water (cold) 1 cup
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- In a large mixing bowl, sift 2 cups flour
- Add 2 cups sugar to the mixing bowl
- Add 4 tablespoons of cocoa to the mixing bowl
- Mix the ingredient in the large mixing bowl
- In a sauce pan, add 1 stick of butter (Oleo)
- Add ½ cup shorting or vegetable oil to sauce pan
- Add 1 cup of (cold) water to sauce pan
- Bring sauce pan ingredients to a boil
- Pour (hot) sauce pan mixture into the large mixing bowl (with flour, sugar and cocoa)
- Mix well the ingredients in the large mixing bowl
- Add ½ cup buttermilk to a separate small mixing bowl
- Add 1 teaspoon baking soda to the small mixing bowl and dissolve in the buttermilk
- Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the small mixing bowl and mix
- Pour the small mixing bowl ingredients into the large mixing bowl
- Add 2 eggs to the large mixing bowl
- Mix well the ingredients in the large mixing bowl
- Grease cookie sheet/pan with butter
- Pour ingredients from large mixing bowl into the greased cookie sheet/pan
- Spread the mixture evenly in the cookie sheet/pan (11”x116”)
- Put cookie sheet/pan into oven
- Bake for 18-20 minutes

Icing
Ingredients
- Butter or margarine 1 stick
- Cocoa 4 tablespoons
- Milk 1/3 cup
- Powdered Sugar 1 pound (box)
- Nuts (optional) 1 cup
- Vanilla extract 1 teaspoon
Directions
- In a medium sauce pan, combine 1 butter stick and 1/3 cup of milk until the butter is melted and well combined
- Add the ingredients from the sauce pan to a mixing bowl
- Add 1 pound of powdered sugar to the mixing bowl
- Add 4 tablespoons of cocoa to the mixing bowl
- Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the mixing bowl
- Add 1 cup of nuts to the mixing bowl (optional)
- Using a mixer, combine the ingredients in the mixing bowl
- Spread the ingredients in the mixing bowl over the cake, while it is still warm
